The Importance of Castration in Preventing Cancer in Pets
In this month of Paw October, we’re sharing tips and general information about cancer in animals and how to prevent certain types of cancer. And today, we’re going to tackle a crucial topic for pet health: neutering.
As well as controlling the population of abandoned animals, this procedure plays an important role in preventing certain types of cancer.
Benefits of castration in cancer prevention:
- Dogs:
- Dramatically reduces the risk of breast cancer in females
- Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer in males
- Decreases the incidence of prostate cancer in males
- Cats:
- Almost completely prevents breast cancer in females
- Reduces the risk of hormone-related tumours in both sexes
In addition, neutering can prevent other health and behavioural problems, such as uterine infections, territory marking or even aggression.
Additional tips for preventing cancer in animals:
- Protect your pet from excessive sunlight to prevent skin cancer
- Avoid obesity, as excess weight is linked to a higher risk of cancer
- Keep your pet away from areas with high pollution
- Choose toys and accessories without toxic substances

Remember that neutering is a safe and effective procedure when carried out by a qualified vet. Consult your vet to determine the best age to neuter your pet.
