Animal Abandonment as a Public Health Problem

Animal abandonment is not just an animal welfare issue – it is also a serious public health problem that affects the entire community.

Abandoned animals often become reservoirs and transmitters of zoonotic diseases – illnesses that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Without regular vaccination and deworming, these animals can spread rabies, leptospirosis, echinococcosis and other diseases that are highly harmful to humans.

Clusters of abandoned animals create conditions for the reproduction of parasites and disease vectors such as ticks and fleas, which can infest residential areas. In addition, uncontrolled reproduction exacerbates the problem, creating cycles of abandonment and disease.

Abandoned and unsterilised animals create uncontrolled populations and animals wandering onto roads can cause road accidents, posing an additional risk to public safety.

Solving this problem requires an integrated approach: mass sterilisation, responsible adoption campaigns, mandatory electronic identification and effective enforcement of laws against abandonment.

Caring for abandoned animals means protecting everyone’s health. Help us in this mission.
